JapanThe Japanese administered the Marshall Islands, as well as the rest of former German Micronesia, as a Mandate on behalf of the League of Nations. In the late 1930s several islands were developed into naval and air bases. USAAfter Pearl harbor the US carried out a number of attacks on the Japanese positions in Micronesia, culminating in the conquest of many islands during 1944. Several Japanese air bases in the Marshalls were neutralised and by-passed.
