Postage Stamps used in the German Marshall Islands Forged Cancels by Dirk H.R. Spennemann |
Francois Fournier created both forged overprints on genuine stamps, and complete stamp and overprint forgeries (see here for discussion). The date cancel Fournier employed was 8/6/97. The exampe shown below shows such a cancel on a standard, non-overprinted Eagle series stamp. As the cancel is unclear compared to the clear cancel used by Fournier, it is possible that this is even a second degree forgery. As the Type II cancel was first used in Jaluit on 21 May 1900, this is clearly a forgery. A backdated cancel can be excluded, as the '97' year slug was never in existence for the Type II cancel |
