Postage Stamps used in the German Marshall Islands
Forged Cancels

Francois Fournier created both forged overprints on genuine stamps, and complete stamp and overprint forgeries (see here for discussion). The date cancel Fournier employed was 8/6/97. The exampe shown below shows such a cancel on a standard, non-overprinted Eagle series stamp. As the cancel is unclear compared to the clear cancel used by Fournier, it is possible that this is even a second degree forgery.

As the Type II cancel was first used in Jaluit on 21 May 1900, this is clearly a forgery. A backdated cancel can be excluded, as the '97' year slug was never in existence for the Type II cancel
