Postage Stamps used in the German Marshall Islands
Forged Jaluit Date Cancel on Military Cover
by Dirk H.R. Spennemann

The loss of the colonies at the early stage of the war meant that the prices for cancelled colonial stamps increased dramatically during the war. This gave rise to a range of cancel forgeries. The item shown below is a military ('Feldpost') cover which laks the right hand section where the original stamp (if any) and date cancel would have been. A 20 Pfennig Germania stamp has been added at the left and cancelled with a forged Cancel designed similar to Cancel II. Without an inspection of the original it cannot be ascertained whether the entire covers may be a forgery as well or whether, as suspected, a genuine cover served as the basis.
