Postage Stamps used in the German Marshall Islands Cancels--Jaluit Linie Cancel Steamer Germania by Dirk H.R. Spennemann |
The Jaluit-Gesellschaft operated two steamers in Micronesia, the Oceana (from 1901-1903) and the Germania (from 1904-1914). In 1904 the purpose-built Germania replaced the now wrecked Oceana. By 1905 the service included the following stops: Sydney -- Ocean I. -- Tarawa -- Butaritari -- Nauru -- Jaluit -- Kosrae -- Pohnpei -- Chuuk -- Saipan -- Yap -- Palau -- HongKong (and back the same way). Mail carred on that service was cancelled using the cancel Germania I |
Essay (?) for Germania Cancel. Never used | Cancel Germania I Cancel used on the Jaluit-Gesellschaft steamer Germania . |
The cancel for the Germania was redesigned with a clear 'Jaluit-Linie' replacing the Sydney-Hongkong" text in the cancels' center. Inutially, it seems, it was intended to use the 'a' lettering, but this was abandoned and a new 'b' code was used for the Germania. These cancels also exist as forgeries. The cancel colour is normally black, but purple ink is also known for genuine cancels in 1914 . These cancels can occur on stamps from the Marshall Islands, the Caroline Islands, German New Guinea and the Marianas. |
| Usage of the cancel on domestic Germania series stamps was permitted |
