German Stamps of the Caroline Islands
compiled by Dirk H.R. Spennemann
The German stamps for the Caroline Islands comprised of four issues: the 1899 and the 1900 Eagle issue of the German Empire overprinted with the word Karolinen set at an angle of 48° in 1899 and at an angle of 58° in 1900. This was followed in 1901 by the formal German colonial issue of the Yacht key type. During World War I some values of the Yacht issues were also issued with watermarks, commencing in 1915. As by that time the Carolines had been occupied by Japanese forces, these stamps could only be bought at the Philatelic Bureau of the General Post Office in Berlin.
