Postage Stamps used in the German Marshall Islands Forged Jaluit Date Cancel on Military Cover by Dirk H.R. Spennemann |
The loss of the colonies at the early stage of the war meant that the prices for cancelled colonial stamps increased dramatically during the war. This gave rise to a range of cancel forgeries. The item shown below is a military ('Feldpost') cover which laks the right hand section where the original stamp (if any) and date cancel would have been. A 20 Pfennig Germania stamp has been added at the left and cancelled with a forged Cancel designed similar to Cancel II. Without an inspection of the original it cannot be ascertained whether the entire covers may be a forgery as well or whether, as suspected, a genuine cover served as the basis. |
